At various points along the trajectory between then and now, Travis have sold millions of albums (just under three million of The Man Who in the UK alone); they’ve been the subject of an award-winning feature length documentary (Almost Fashionable) and Fran has elicited acclaim from Paul McCartney, Elton John and Graham Nash – all songwriters whose ability to divine a timeless melody out of thin air has sustained them through the decades. ’10 Songs’ is an album that holds you in its own emotional microclimate at the outset and keeps you there. It’s also a grown-up record. ’10 Songs’ is a record about the way life comes at love and what love does to weather those challenges. “This is no rehearsal/This is the take,” sings Fran at the beginning of Waving At The Window, over an insistent piano hook, “Promises you once kept/Are going to break Every track on this album carries an even load. No passengers here. Nowhere to hide. “I write songs in an antiquated way,” explains their creator, “Sitting at the bottom of the bed, ‘pouring my simple sorrow to the sound hole and my knee’, as Joni Mitchell put it.” As a songwriter based in L.A., Fran Healy doesn’t need anyone to tell him this is no longer how it’s done. It’s far from uncommon for the credits on successful modern pop songs to feature upwards of ten writers. Hits by committee. “It’s fine,” notes Fran, “Personally though, I’ll take ten songs written by one person over one song written by ten people. And if I feel that way, then surely someone else must do too.”

Patrick McDermott began his North Americans project with two albums: 2013’s No_No, and 2015’s Legends. Both records were dense affairs, with blocks of sound shifting and moving like melting glaciers to create a gorgeous, impenetrable, collection of digital drones. Though they sounded nothing like what would come a bit later, both records showcased McDermott’s understanding of mood and composition. On 2018’s Going Steady, McDermott blended his love of American Primitive guitar playing with playful pieces that never overstayed their welcome. He also began collaborating with a wide range of artists: from Julianna Barwick to guitar prodigy Hayden Pedigo, as well as Cloud Nothings’ Dylan Baldi, and more.
Now, two years later, McDermott is releasing Roped In, a gorgeous, intimate, and often spare album that pulls back from the collaborative nature established on Going Steady for a collection of fragile drone pieces anchored by McDermott’s intricate but direct guitar playing and haunting pedal steel work from Portland, Oregon’s Barry Walker.
Where Going Steady was brimming with ideas and micromovements, Roped In is relatively sparse, built on patience and the kind of once-in-a-lifetime collaborative energy between McDermott and Walker, and accented by occasional collaborations from harpist Mary Lattimore and guitarist William Tyler. “I wanted to focus on the simplicity of the music,” McDermott says. “I didn’t want to be beholden to this massive goal of [making music] to see how progressive and experimental it could be. I was attempting to cherish the pureness of this type of music.”

Ivey is back in the spotlight with his sophomore solo album Waiting Out The Storm via Anti- Records. Produced by Price, the ten-song album finds Jeremy Ivey expanding his sound with his band the Extraterrestrials. On Waiting Out The Storm, an album with electricity coursing through it's veins, Ivey zooms out to take a widescreen look at the world around us-the landscape, the people that populate it, and the ways in which we help each other survive against all odds. Ivey, who writes prolifically and cites Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan as influences, evokes "'Mutations'-era Beck along with classic country" (Rolling Stone). His solo material travels through a wide spectrum of classic folk, gently frayed psychedelia, pop, and a bit of Southern rock.

Produced by Randall Poster and Stewart Lerman, 'I'd Rather Lead a Band' finds Loudon Wainwright III partnering up with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks for their take on some of the American songbook's finest classics. This album showcases a fresh side of LW3 with big band sounds and timeless songs from Irving Berlin, Cliff Friend, Lew Brown and other Tin Pan Alley contemporaries.
Where Birds Say reminisced on the past and Extralife looked to imagined futures, Darlingside’s new album Fish Pond Fish concerns the claustrophobia of the here and now. Some of the most consistent themes on the album are the desire to return to past states (“Keep coming home,” “take me back to south of Denver“) on one hand and change on the other. In some cases, repetition and return are a desirable way to deal with uncertain times; in others, the stagnancy of the present is overwhelming. Much of the album lives in the space between repetition and change, and considers how those two pieces complement one another — how either one can be a stress or a salve depending on the circumstances, and how even change itself predictably repeats. As the band sings, "things will change, and change again."
The sense of an 'eternal present' came into sharper focus with the coronavirus quarantine, which fell into place just as the band was finalizing the last batch of songs and forced the cancellation of the final weeks of recording at Tarquin Studios with Grammy Award-winning produced Peter Katis (Interpol, The National). Since the band was unable to meet up in-person during the quarantine, each member set up a home recording rig to capture sounds individually, while mixing, writing, and arrangement decisions were all carried out virtually. Since the band's favored approaches for sound capture (playing and/or singing together around one mic, for example) and in-studio discussion were made impossible by the quarantine, the group was forced to lean more heavily on individual experimentation and decision-making, both in recording and editing — as a result, the entire album bears an imprint of each of the four members in a way their previous releases have not. Likewise, at Katis' suggestion, many components of their informal demos were preserved as layers in the produced tracks to retain the spirit of the initial recordings, resulting in a collection of songs that is simultaneously the most bedroom-tracked and production-heavy full-length album that the band has yet released.
De-formation: Piano Variations, a work for solo piano. Composed and performed by Galás in September 2019, the 21:19 minute piece is based on the expressionist poem Das Fieberspital (The Fever Hospital). Written by German poet Georg Heym in 1912, Das Fieberspital's depiction of warehoused patients of yellow fever presaged the treatment and hiding of infected and damaged soldiers later in WWI.
De-formation depicts a march and delivery of maimed and infected soldiers to hospitals and industrial warehouses throughout Germany during and after the First World War. In the hospitals the maimed would receive experimental operations and the infected would be confined to protect the mental vitality, enthusiasm, and health of citizens of the State. The Piano Variations were inspired by Galás' work on the score for Das Fieberspital. In organizing the work, she realized that the piano skeleton had become it's own work, and she decided to record that in advance of the vocal work. One-sided vinyl LP, with poster of D. Galas artwork, and MP3 card.
Blue Öyster Cult return with a mammoth new studio album “The Symbol Remains“ this October. Blue Note debut by cornetist & composer Ron Miles, this is the follow-up to his widely acclaimed 2017 album I Am A Man, featuring the same remarkable collaborations. Miles wrote most of the music in Summer 2018 as his father was passing away; it's both a loving dedication and a riveting spiritual document that scores the journey from Earth to eternal peace. "Rainbows deal with renewal. sometimes, our limitations can inform what we can see." Double LP.
Boy Pablo -"rest up" Limited Edition Red 7" Single LP. "This song is one of the most personal tracks I've written. Official Mr Bongo Hip Hop Reissue. Nas has had a career of generally consistent excellence, punctuated with a few lulls. He's an incredibly skilled rapper sometimes accused of having a tin ear when it comes to choosing beats - especially on albums (and the entirety of 'Illmatic' aside, obviously). 'Made You Look' was a shot in the arm for Nas at a time when he'd shed some of his core, street fanbase. After the unfocussed 'Nastradamus' and 'I Am...' albums he'd had a return to some kind of form with 'Stillmatic', but many felt he came off second best in the ensuing battle with Jay-Z. This single, a club and street classic almost from the moment it dropped, is exactly what he needed to reconnect with his fans and to show he could still throw down. Lyrically, it's hardcore bragging 101, delivered with panache and numerous quotables that themselves would go on to be sampled. Key to it all, however, is that beat. Salaam Remi was no stranger to resurrections, having almost single-handedly turned The Fugees from forgettable also-rans to major-players. The beat here is deceptively simple, one of hundreds of records to chop up Incredible Bongo Band's 'Apache' but doing so in a way that felt instantly fresh. Nearly 20 years later it still has the power to get a stationary crowd moving, an empty dancefloor to fill, a still head to nod. This original version has never been on 7" before. It's presented with full artwork.

Machinedrum releases his fourth album on Ninja Tune. A View of U is available on silver, white, and black marbled LP and CD. Machinedrum (Travis Stewart) returns with his definitive new album 'A View of U' featuring an incredible cast of collaborators including Sub Focus, Chrome Sparks, Father (Awful Records), Freddie Gibbs, Mono/Poly (Brainfeeder), Tigran Hamasyan, Jesse Boykins III, Rochelle Jordan and Tanere'lle. The use of 'U' in the title 'A View of U' represents the Universe aka the Infinite. The central theme of the album is the concept of having an out of body experience (OOBE). 'The feeling of being out of your body feels infinite. It feels like time has stopped. It feels like the birth of creation,' explains Travis. Machinedrum has previously been featured in Billboard, Mixmag, Dazed, VICE, Time Out, Stereogum, The Quietus, Drowned in Sound, Narc Magazine, Clash, Earmilk and more. Travis has also contributed to guest mixes for major stations around the world including NPR, BBC Radio 1 (including an Essential Mix in 2013), BBC 1Xtra and KEXP, plus local tastemaker stations such as The Lot Radio, Red Light Radio and NTS. Machinedrum is also one half of JETS (Innovative Leisure) with Jimmy Edgar, one half of Sepalcure (Hot Flush) with Praveen and one half of Dream Continuum with Om Unit. His solo work has garnered over 50 million streams worldwide. He has additionally collaborated with the likes of DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn, D'WN, Lone, Azealia Banks, Roots Manuva, Boards of Canada, and more.
15 years after the release of their debut album, Daptone's Royal Court from Staten Island delivers a truly epic collection of new material that finds the group further bridging the gap between the farfisa-fueled Ethio-Funk stylings of their early recordings, with the psychedelic, Sabbath-inspired hellfire of late. The title track and lead single, Long in the Tooth, jumps out of the speakers with a heavy drum break (reminiscent of the B-Boy approved grooves of their early output), drenched in a pulsating, hallucinatory wall of organ, menacing horns, and a rugged guitar riff that pummels the listener into Budonian submission. Imagine Link Wray and Mulatu Astatke collaborating on a Italian horror soundtrack and you're getting close.
Carla Bruni - "Carla Bruni" - This eponymous album is the reflection of Carla Bruni herself, a wholehearted embracing of her true self. Always sensitive, with emotions on the surface at times, the music of the album bears witness to a unique temperament and avoids ostentation. Through it we can sense a desire for a calm simplicity, free from glitter and arrogance. That's probably because the production of these songs was planned well before anyone set foot in the recording studio. Guitar, piano, a bit of foot-tapping and fragments of melody are the foundation of all the tracks, recorded behind closed doors with Albin de la Simone, who produced the entire album. For his first collaboration with Carla Bruni, the multi-instrumentalist - one of the very best on the French scene in the past 20 years - was determined to give her new songs the most delicate treatment. Listening to the new manifesto, "Carpe Diem", you can't help but regain a strong sense of the present moment. And this is what's so disarming about Bruni's songs: the intimacy, the simplicity, in a spirit of freedom, friendship and love. Compact Disc
Vinyl LP pressing. Includes digital download. Mrs. Piss is a new collaboration between Chelsea Wolfe and Jess Gowrie. Drawing on their collective rock, metal, and industrial influences, the project began while the two were touring around together during Wolfe's Hiss Spun album in 2017. The result is their debut album Self-Surgery, which was recorded at The Dock Studio in Sacramento, CA and in Wolfe's home studio, The Canyon. These songs feel more urgent and visceral than anything either of them has created before: heaviness spurred on by punk spirit.
